A Biofeedback Project in Second Life

Greetings, and welcome to the InnerLife project!

Q. What is BioFeedback?
A. BioFeedback is a system of measuring biometric data, such as skin conductivity, heart rate, brainwaves, and other aspects of the body which are tied to health and well-being. In a biofeedback game, players learn techniques of raising and lowering the energy levels of their bodies, as well as breathing techniques to improve health, stress-management, concentration, and many other valuable things, in a fun and engaging environment.

Q. What is the InnerLife project?
A. InnerLife is an idea for an online service which would provide a biofeedback-based experience similar to standalone games such as
the Journey to Wild Divine or Mindsurfer games, but many people could play it together, through the internet. Players would be able to see each other (or rather, each other's "avatars"), chat with each other by typing or using a voice service, and play cooperative multiplayer events together using biometric sensors connected to their own computers. The InnerLife project will not duplicate the content of existing biofeedback games, but will add new activities and learning areas.

Q. Who is creating InnerLife?
A. It is a community effort being created by volunteers (see below). The project was started by .

Q. What is Second Life?
A. "A 3D digital world imagined, created and owned by its Residents." Second Life is a service in which people can create 3D environments like buildings, gardens, etc., as well as objects like vehicles, clothing, or furniture. Other people can visit and enjoy these creations. Each player is represented in the game by an "avatar," which can be customized to look like the player or any way the player would like to look. Second Life was chosen for the InnerLife project because it supports both Windows and Macintosh computers, is relatively inexpensive, has an interface through which to support the biometric data, and has the look and feel desired for the InnerLife project. Plus, in Second Life, you can fly. :)

Q. What do I need to play Second Life?
A. Second Life is available for both the Macintosh and PC. You need a high-speed internet connection (Cable modem or DSL), and a computer meeting the following requirements:

Macintosh OSX Requirements
Windows XP Requirement
Graphics Card: GeForce 2 or better, ATI Radeon 8500 or better
Computer:
1 GHZ G4 or better, 512 MB of RAM
OS:
Mac OS 10.3 (Panther)

Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 2 (32MB RAM) or higher, or ATI Radeon 8500 (32MB RAM) or higher
Computer:
800MHZ or higher, 256MB RAM or more
OS:
Windows XP/2000
DirectX 8 or 9

Q. How much does Second Life cost?
A. A 7-day trial is available for free; the software can be downloaded from the Second Life website. A "Basic" membership is available for a one-time fee of $9.95. There is a monthly fee for a "Premium" membership ($9.95/month) if one wants to own "land" apart from the InnerLife project.

Q. How much would it cost to play InnerLife?
A. At the present time, there is no cost planned to participate in InnerLife activities. There will probably be a small one-time hardware registration fee per player to support the cost of the XML-RPC server. We will also need a group of approximately 20 charter members who are willing to contribute to the purchase of an "island" in Second Life on which to build InnerLife. It is anticipated that charter members will pay a monthly fee in return for a plot of land on which they can build their own content within the theme of InnerLife. The monthly cost of this plot is expected to be less than the cost of comparable land in Second Life, with no "tier" cost. The remaining central area of the island will be used to build the main InnerLife activities and areas.

Q. Is InnerLife ready to play yet?
A. No, not yet. This project was initially proposed in September 2004 and has gone through several revisions as of this writing (February 2005). We are currently gathering a group of interested builders and players and creating the interface to connect the biometric devices to Second Life. This is an exciting time in our project.

Q. Can I help build InnerLife?

A. Yes! We are looking for volunteers to help build the landscape, temples, caves, etc. once we have a group and have bought some land. Click here to set up a Second Life account , and IM Elizabeth ("Nekokami Dragonfly") to join the InnerLife group. A premium membership is not required to be part of the project, a Basic membership is fine. By using this link to join Second Life, you contribute a "referral bonus" to the pool of "Linden Dollars" (the money in Second Life) which we can use to buy land and pay other expenses.

Q. What if I just want to play the game?
A. That's fine too. Click here to set up a Second Life account, and join the InnerLife group as a Journeyer. Again, a premium membership is not required, the one-payment "Basic" membership is fine. Your referral bonus will help to cover costs for our project.

Q. I have a question which wasn't answered here. What should I do?
A. Contact Elizabeth Dalton. She may be reached via , or on the Wild Divine forums as ElizabethDalton, or on Second Life as "Nekokami Dragonfly." Elizabeth's Avatar, Nekokami Dragonfly
